Why Hemp?
We use hemp material for many reasons:
- It is very strong – 4-20 times stronger than cotton depending on the weave!
- It is extremely durable and naturally resistant to mold and mildew – hemp can last up to six times as long as other materials used in apparel and accessories.
- It is biodegradable and, therefore, does not harm the environment.
- It requires less energy, produces less carbon, and creates less pollution than other forms of fabric manufacturing.
- It requires less water than other crops and has deep roots that leave the soil in excellent condition for the next crop.
- The difference in producing a hemp t-shirt and a cotton one is 300 gallons of water per shirt.
- It is naturally less vulnerable to insects and crowds out other weeds so pesticides and fertilizers are unnecessary and, therefore, are not released into the environment.
- It is more water-absorbent than cotton, so it will retian dye better than any other fabric, keeping your colors from fading.
- It paradoxically keeps you cooler in warm weather and warmer in cool weather. This is due to the unique structure of hemp fibers.
- It repels up to 95% of U.V. rays while other materials such as cotton repel significantly less.
- It promotes fair trade and human rights.
- Christopher Columbus' ships were fully rigged in hemp.
- The U.S. Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were written on hemp paper.
- Hemp fabrics go all the way back to 8,000 BC in ancient Mesopotamia.
